A Brief History of Zebulon Montgomery PikeZebulon Montgomery Pike is Colorado’s most infamous explorer and rumored spy. In the early 1800's, Zebulon was dispatched to explore the great Western frontier. Zebulon braved harsh winter weather, Native American tribes and hostile Spanish troops.
It was rumored that Zebulon’s true mission was not exploration, but to discover what the Spanish were up to along the Southwestern border. It was during these missions that Zebulon fell in love with a distant peak in the Rocky Mountains. Pike spent several days trying to reach the peak. He made it as far as nearby 9,000 ft. Cheyenne Peak before harsh winter weather forced him to turn back.
Zebulon believed that no man would ever summit the 14,110 ft “Grand Peak” for which now bears his name. Now, Pike’s Peak is the most visited mountain in North America and the second most visited mountain in the world.
